Franklin Square Hospital - Pediatric ED

Baltimore, Maryland

With an increased demand for emergency care in their existing ER and a need for a separate Pediatrics ER, representatives at Franklin Square Hospital initiated a focused renovation effort. The project consists of a new Nurses' Station, charting area, and staff lounge, as well as a waiting area for families, a playroom for children, and "Cart Alley." An initial programming study for the project identified two important design issues: creating a child-friendly atmosphere and developing a more functionally-sound Nurses' Station. After several schematic iterations, the Nurses' Station emerged as the project's focal point, while visions of a solar/planetary motif evolved for the children. As a functionally-unique feature, "Cart Alley" was developed for the many "homeless" carts thoughtlessly scattered throughout a typical Emergency Room. At completion, all new finishes had been installed throughout, including such areas as five semi-private exam rooms, three inpatient rooms, three inpatient-flexible exam rooms, and one trauma room.
